Even Adults Can Enjoy Jumping Rope

Jumping rope as a child is a memory shared by most people. But did you know this is one of the best exercises for adults to participate in also? It's true -- jump roping is an excellent cardiovascular workout. There are lots of advantages to the practice of jump rope, or skip rope as it is sometimes called. One of the best parts about a jump rope workout is that all the equipment you need is a jump rope appropriate for your size. These ropes are lightweight and super portable. This means you can take your workout anywhere you go.



Jumping rope is a great cardio workout and it does put a certain strain on the ankles and knees but much less than the strain incurred through jogging. People with hip, knee or ankle problems may not be able to participate in this form of exercise but everyone else can. It is recommended that you speak to your doctor before beginning any kind of fitness regimen. This is just to make sure you are in good health and able to exercise safely. The majority of healthy adults will be given approval and encouragement to begin a cardio program.


Don't worry if it's been a long time since you've had a jump rope in your hands -- it's the same as riding a bike. After a few practice tries you'll be jumping with skill. Experts recommend a beaded rope for newbies because they offer more control. Choose an adjustable jump rope so you can fix it to accommodate your height. The rope should be adjusted so that the handles of the jump rope reach your underarms. To avoid foot and/or ankle injury, make certain you are wearing a good pair of athletic shoes made to absorb impact and protect the feet. Cross trainers are an ideal choice when shopping for jump rope shoes as they are multipurpose.


To get started again, all you do is take the ends of the rope in each hand, grasping the handles gently. Swing the rope so that it goes above your head then jump when it gets under your feet. Sure, you might trip a few times but in a short time you'll be jumping ropes like a pro. One thing to remember is that jump rope is a serious workout and you should alternate it with other forms of exercise. After only three minutes of vigorous rope jumping you're likely to be out of breath unless you are a trained athlete. Switch your jump roping with walking in place, yoga, strength training or any other favorite exercise.
